Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
MBSR is a program originally developed at the Stress Reduction Clinic of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1990. Since then, mindfulness and MBSR have been studied extensively with consistent research findings that patients practicing mindfulness and MBSR experience significant symptom reduction and relief from anxiety, depression, chronic pain, stress related illness, and substance abuse relapse. In my practice, it is very evident that all of us are subject to becoming overwhelmed by the sheer pace of our increasingly complex life, constant bombardment of information, 24/7 social networking, media focus on traumatic local and world events. All of this can lead to frustration, impatience, self-judgment, anxiety, and unreasonable expectations of ourselves and others. We obsess and we worry, don’t sleep well or enough, eat and drink too much, don’t have time or energy to exercise, and take medications that may or may not help. MBSR can be an effective antidote and pathway to a much more relaxed and enjoyable life.
This eight week group teaches and provides practice opportunities of stress reduction techniques. Included in each group session are education regarding the causes and effects of stress, breath awareness, meditation, and standing or sitting yoga (no prior experience needed), centering meditation, mindful inquiry, and helpful communication techniques. Homework and practice exercises are provided as reinforcement between weekly meetings. During the 7th week, the group does not meet on the regularly scheduled evening, instead enjoying a half day retreat to solidify and deepen what has been learned and practiced.
8-Week Groups offered periodically. Please check the Calendar for current groups.
